Home for the Holidays

with Christie Tyler

“Throwing on a look rather than wearing sweats is the first step to lifting spirits in these crazy times", says content creator Christie Tyler about a holiday season unlike any other. And we couldn't agree more. Here's how she does just that in the Carolyn in red in her festively decorated New York City apartment.

Explain the three looks you have styled with the Carolyn in red?

Look 1
The first look is my personal favorite - totally classic with a red lip, gold earrings by Jil Sander and heels by Jimmy Choo. This look is the perfect holiday look - a little flashy, but timeless. The Carolyn is so versatile and classic, you really can’t go wrong!

Look 2
The second look I think is lovely for every day, styled with an oversized vintage blazer and boots by Vagabond. It is approachable yet chic, and comfortable for running errands.

Look 3
The third look is more of a family-friendly look, styled with a black turtleneck and slouchy boots by Miista. I think it is perfect if you want to have a more comfortable approach - ideal for a holiday with the family or a cozy date night.

How are you dressing up at home – what are simple tricks to elevate a look and lift the spirits?

I think dressing up in general is the first step! Honestly, throwing on a look rather than wearing sweats (like I have done for many days in a row) is the first step to lifting spirits in these crazy times. Trousers with a belt and turtleneck always make me feel chic and effortless - and it’s a comfortable look for wearing around the house. Also, adding little accessories like a pair of earrings can elevate a look, especially for an at-home date night.

Is there a treasured item in your wardrobe, you are pulling out each year during holidays?

Any pair of Manolos are such a treat to wear around the holidays. Though they are a great staple year-round, there’s something extra special about wearing Manolos around the holidays, especially if they have a little sparkle. Also, I am such a simple girl that I don’t often wear jewelry, so throwing on some fancier earrings or a necklace makes any look feel festive for me.

How are you creating a festive atmosphere at home?

It’s been all about candles and natural garlands. We’ve got a real tree about a week ago and we’ve been having so much fun decorating it with lights and ornaments. I prefer everything to be real because it gives off the most incredible, festive aroma. Then we just set up candles all around the living room - black candlesticks give off such a romantic vibe. Appreciating these small little moments decorating at home together has been really nice, though poor little Rosie [Christie’s Boston Terrier] is still scared of the tree… We’re working on that!

Where are you getting inspiration from for decorating your home during this time of the year? Any accounts you love following?

I’m not going to lie, I’ve always struggled with decorating for the holidays without making it cheesy! But I think keeping it natural, minimal, and romantic has been a great guide for me. Of course Eye Swoon, Colin King and Jake Arnold have the best eye when it comes to interior design and decorating tastefully. There are so many incredible accounts I love, honestly too many! I get so much inspiration from mood board accounts like @do.like.that and @fashiiongonerouge… The list is endless.

Any tips for shopping for gifts in a mindful way?

I would say try to think about a person’s hobbies and interests, or take mental notes throughout the year. So many times my friends or family say things like “ugh, I really need…”, and in that moment I write a note in my phone. They might forget even saying it, but when they receive that very gift they’re going to be so happy that you remembered or thought of it (even if your phone helped you out… They don’t have to know).

Of course it’s incredible to donate throughout the year, but helping out in person is extra wonderful.

A cause that’s close to your heart?

God’s Love We Deliver is a charity based in New York City that cooks and delivers meals for people too sick to shop or cook for themselves - it is so amazing to help out around this time of year in person. Of course it’s incredible to donate throughout the year, but helping out in person is extra wonderful. Adam and I helped out in the kitchen a couple of weeks ago and had the best time.
