Timeless Style

with Felicity Brand

“I like to think of my style as expressive minimalism”, says Felicity Brand, Head of Buying for ModeSportif. Here the Londoner, who moved to Sydney five years ago, shows how that looks like, wearing two of her favorite REFINE pieces.

Explain how you style the Carolyn 2.0 slip dress and the Gwyn top in black?

I love the maxi length of the Carolyn 2.0 slip dress as it's so versatile in that you can wear it with flats for a chic day look or you can dress it up with a pair of heels to head into the evening.

The Gwyn top has become a wardrobe hero of mine. I wear it casually with denim, belt and a ballet flat in the day but also love to style it with tailoring if I want to look more put together.

I no longer feel the pressure to follow trends

How has the way you dress evolved over time?

I like to think of my style as expressive minimalism. I no longer feel the pressure to follow trends and have a pretty signature wardrobe of tailoring, denim and good quality basics.

As a buyer you are constantly exposed to new product - what are the criteria for you when buying something new for yourself?

I like to ask myself "will I wear this next year?" as it’s a good benchmark for whether it’s worth investing. All my most treasured wardrobe pieces are timeless classics e.g. a great trench coat and it’s good to remind myself of that.

Your favorite Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration?

I like to draw inspiration from talented stylists and creatives such as Alex Carl and Julie Pelipas.

What is the most treasured piece in your wardrobe?

My OLD Celine Madame boots. Not only are they an iconic style but they remind me of my first Celine buying appointment which I was so excited for at the time. Whenever I wear them it’s always a good reminder to be grateful for how far I have come in my career. I also met my husband to be wearing them so clearly a lucky charm!

Is there something that’s persistent on your wish list and you are planning to buy one day on a special occasion?

I’ve always wanted a vintage black and white Chanel swimsuit but not found the right one yet.

Through your job you’re discovering a lot of new brands – what are you looking for in this seemingly oversaturated market when buying for ModeSportif?

I first consider if there is a gap in our offer for the brand as I think it’s important to curate an overall offer for our customer where all our brands all have a point of difference as I personally find it overwhelming when there are too many options in a store. I then consider the fundamentals - quality, sustainability, price point and marketing strategy to ensure that I am confident we can build a long-term relationship with the brand.

Packing is much easier when I only wear black, white and blue

You are traveling a lot – what’s your packing formula and what is always in your suitcase?

Packing is much easier when I only wear black, white and blue as everything tends to work back with each other. A boxy white t-shirt, a great pair of blue jeans and a classic blazer are in my suitcase all year round.
