Timeless Style

with Kristen Marie Nichols

It's no secret that we love the '90s. Something we share with whowhatwear.com's Senior Fashion Editor Kristen Marie Nichols. Here she's sharing three (plus one extra!) looks with the ultimate piece inspired by our favorite era: The Carolyn slip dress.

Explain the four looks you have styled with the Carolyn in ivory?

Look 1

Worn with a striped Hommegirls button-down shirt, strappy Studio Amelia flats and a quilted Chanel bag, this look is something I would wear for a weekend brunch with friends. I love offsetting the slip with more casual pieces to dress it down for the daytime.

[The Carolyn dress] taps into everything I love about elegant, minimal ‘90s style

Look 2

For a pared-back look, I styled the dress with Chanel slingbacks, a Hereu tote bag and a Monica Vinader chain necklace. This is exactly what I would pack into my suitcase to wear for a trip to Paris or NYC.

Look 3

Paired with knee-high Gia Borghini boots and a satin Merlette bag, this is how I would transition the Carolyn slip dress into fall. Taking inspiration from the Bottega Veneta F/W 22 runway, I tied a sweater at the waist to add some texture.

Look 4 (we got one extra look)

Styled with a WARDROBE.NYC blazer, Prada slingbacks, and Young Frankk hoop earrings, this is a look I would wear for a day of market appointments followed by dinner with friends, probably involving dirty martinis at Sunset Tower.

How did you find your style and how has the way you dress evolved over time?

My style is always evolving and as I get older, I definitely feel more secure with what I like and who I am. Stepping back, I've realized that my core personal style evolves around pieces that are classic, polished, and '90s-inspired, so I think about those elements whenever I'm adding something new to my wardrobe, rather than gravitating towards the latest trends

I’m drawn to brands that have a strong point of view

What are the criteria for you when buying something new?

I typically invest in pieces that I know I’ll have in my closet forever. Timelessness, quality and versatility are things that I look for — I’m after items that I want to come back to time and time again.

Tell us why you consider the Carolyn in ivory a timeless piece of clothing and how does it fit in with your wardrobe?

Reminiscent of one of my personal style icons, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the Carolyn dress is a stunning take on a classic slip dress. Finished with clean lines and barely-there straps, it taps into everything I love about elegant, minimal '90s style — something REFINE captures so beautifully.

Timelessness, quality and versatility are things that I look for.

Besides the Carolyn dress in ivory, what are other wardrobe staples of yours?

My approach to clothing is very much about finding the best essentials and the perfect fit. My closet is pretty classic and I’ve collected go-to staples over the years that I wear again and again — Levi's 501 jeans, crisp Hommegirls button-downs, tailored Khaite jackets, Uniqlo tees, Matteau dresses, Frankie Shop suiting and Chanel bags.

Your first memory of fashion?

Growing up in Arizona, my mom and I made regular weekend stops to the local bookstore to comb through tall stacks of magazines, which I consider to be my early fashion education and what sparked my interest in a career in fashion.

What is the most treasured piece in your wardrobe?

The Chanel 2.55 bag I got in Paris — it always reminds me of good times living there.

Is there something that’s persistent on your wish list and you are planning to buy one day on a special occasion?

Right now, I’m interested in collecting items that I will have in my wardrobe forever and hope to pass down one day, so I’m thinking about investing in a timepiece.

What are your hacks when it comes to following trends but staying true to your style and consuming responsibly?

I’m a big believer in vintage and think that it is one of the best ways to truly shop sustainably, regardless of what you’re after. Buying vintage not only gives pieces a new life, but also helps me find items that feel different than what is currently on the market.

Through your job you’re discovering a lot of new brands – what are you looking for in this seemingly oversaturated market?

I’m drawn to brands that have a strong point of view and an element of storytelling that makes an emotional impact.

You are traveling a lot what’s your packing formula and what is always in your suitcase?

I’ve been a notorious overpacker in the past, so over time I’ve worked on packing a tight edit of pieces into my suitcase. As a general rule, I stick to items that I already know I love wearing or plan how I’ll style any new pieces. My main trick when I’m traveling - especially for fashion month or a big vacation - is to style everything in advance and snap photos of my looks so I know I’m packing items that will work together. Then, getting dressed is a breeze once I arrive.
